Your Kidney is Calling
That’s the message that changed Jazmin Evans’ life forever.
At just 30 years old, Evans had already spent more than a decade navigating life with chronic kidney disease, having been diagnosed her senior year of high school. However, she refused to let her condition define her future, always pushing forward.
Evans has earned her undergraduate, master’s and PhD degrees, all while managing her health. During the early years of her doctoral program, her routine included at-home dialysis for eight hours a night, seven nights a week. This was her reality for four years. Then, everything changed.
One evening, while meal prepping and listening to music, Evans’ phone lit up with a message she had been waiting years to see: “YOUR KIDNEY IS CALLING.”
The next day, she received the transplant that saved her life. But her story doesn’t end there. Since her transplant, Evans has transformed her experience into purpose, becoming a passionate advocate for organ donation and health equity. She is using her voice to uplift others facing similar challenges.
“I started speaking out because I didn’t see a lot of young, especially black, women talking about kidney disease,” Evans shares.
As a researcher, she studies clinical algorithms to ensure fair and equitable healthcare assessments. In her community, she founded We Got Us, a Philadelphia-based health pop-up series offering free preventive screenings and education.
Today, Evans is thriving! She is powered by her new kidney and driven by a renewed sense of purpose. Her journey is a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of what organ donation can do for the lives of others.
Evans’ message is simple, yet powerful: Be your own advocate. Consider giving the gift of life.
