July 31, 2023 – Donate Life Pennsylvania – a coalition aimed at increasing the number of donated organs, eyes and tissues available for live-saving transplants – will host its fourth annual PA Donor Day on Aug. 1, 2023. This yearly observance aims to educate and encourage Pennsylvanians to become registered organ donors, with this year’s goal to have 50% of eligible residents registered.
Knowing that eight lives can be saved by one organ donor, this year’s PA Donor Day celebration will be held on August 1 (8/1) and serve as a reminder for all Pennsylvanians to register.
More than 100,000 patients are currently on the transplant waiting list, 7,000 of them Pennsylvanians. Every day, 17 people from across the country die, making the need for more registered organ and tissue donors more critical than ever. PA Donor Day aims to unite and educate Pennsylvanians around the importance of organ, eye and tissue donation.
Donate Life PA is a collaborative initiative between the Center for Organ Recovery & Education (CORE), Gift of Life Donor Program, and the Pennsylvania Departments of Health, Education and Transportation.
“When my father-in-law died unexpectedly in his 50s, the donation of his organs to those in need was a comfort to his family,” said Dr. Debra Bogen, Acting Secretary of Health. “That’s why I am proud to support Donate Life Pennsylvania’s work to inspire more people to sign up to save lives. The best way that you can join us in celebrating this important day is by registering to be an organ donor – and it only takes 30 seconds.”
PA Donor Day kicks off August’s National Minority Donor Awareness Month. This is a collaborative initiative of the National (Organ, Eye and Tissue Donation) Multicultural Action Group to save and heal the lives of diverse communities by creating a positive culture for organ, eye and tissue donation.
