Cornea Recipient and Donor Father
Bruce Edwards, a Berks County Native, knows the importance of organ donation all too well as he is both a transplant recipient and a donor father.
In 1998, with the help of Gift of Life, Bruce received a corneal transplant that restored vision to his right eye. Just ten years later, in March 2008, Bruce made the heroic decision to donate his daughter’s tissue, after she tragically passed away at just 17 years old.
Bruce and his wife Carolyn said that they knew that organ donation is what their daughter, Melissa, would have wanted.
Since his daughter’s passing, Bruce has worked as an organ donation advocate. In 2015, he spoke to state lawmakers before Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives Policy Committee about the importance of organ, tissue, and cornea donation.
“We can’t get caught up in all the minutiae, and forget what’s most important, which is saving lives and enhancing lives,” he said. “I think that’s something we all support.”
Organ donations help someone’s story go on and on. Register today to change lives tomorrow.
