Amanda Demchak
When she was diagnosed with kidney disease while she was pregnant, Amanda knew she had a long road ahead until she finally received the gift that would change her life forever.
Following the birth of two of her children, Amanda spent years struggling to return to the workforce. Her kidney disease had a huge impact on her physical and mental health, and made it difficult for her to continue working and pursuing her dream of going to nursing school.
After spending several years on dialysis and wrestling with the exhausting impact it had on her family, she finally received a phone call from the hospital that they had a kidney available that could be a potential match.
She received her transplant surgery that day and immediately felt healthier and stronger. Amanda has overwhelming gratitude towards her donor family and expressed how none of this would be possible without them. “Emotions and words cannot express what I feel for your family, and I hope one day you know that even in this tragedy, your loved one saved my life in more ways than one,” she said.
Since the procedure, she has been able to return to nursing school, watch her children graduate middle school and begin high school, attend their first homecoming, get their driver’s license, and even go off to college. She is thankful her children have a mother to teach them about the significance of life for the many years to come.
